European AI budgets are still growing. What buyers are actually hiring has changed.

The Stanford AI Index 2025 clocked global corporate AI investment at $252bn — a 26% jump year-on-year. Europe's absolute share is smaller than the US, but it's growing faster in percentage terms, and it's showing up cleanly in what the contract market is now willing to pay for.

What isn't being hired: pure LLM research contractors. That season closed quietly. What is: ML Platform Engineers, MLOps specialists, LLM Application Engineers with RAG and evaluation depth, and — increasingly — AI Governance leads who can navigate the EU AI Act without needing a translator.

The 2026 numbers from our European searches: Senior ML Engineer €780–1,020/day, Staff MLOps €900–1,200/day, LLM Application Engineer €820–1,080/day. Interim Head of AI mandates land €1,200–1,600/day for operators who've actually shipped, higher for regulated verticals (AddanEx placements, Honeypot.io 2026).

The AI Act's high-risk-system obligations became enforceable in 2026, and the effect on contract demand for AI Governance and Assurance specialists was immediate — pipeline demand tripled over twelve months. It's the closest analogue we have to the 2018 GDPR contract wave. Many of the people cashing in are, unsurprisingly, the ones who ran that wave.

The buyer trap to avoid: hiring a research-heavy ML contractor to build a production RAG system. The skill sets have diverged. In 2026, ship-oriented LLM engineers with evaluation discipline are the scarce resource — not model builders.
