Your first data contractor will decide the next two years. Choose accordingly.

Most Series A founders hire the wrong shape first — and spend year two unwinding it. A working framework, with current European rates.

Your first data contractor will decide the next two years. Choose accordingly.

The first data contractor you bring in isn't really a contractor. They're the person who decides — by accident or on purpose — what your data function looks like for the next two years. The stack. The reporting line. The default answer to "can we get a number on that?"

The mistake we see, again and again, is contracting a Senior Data Engineer when the business actually needs an Analytics Engineer. Or the reverse. On paper they look adjacent. In practice they produce completely different outcomes in months one to nine, and you'll feel the divergence for years.

Our test is embarrassingly simple. If your first six months of value depends on decisions made from a dashboard, contract analytics-first. If it depends on a pipeline that doesn't exist yet, contract engineering-first. If you can't answer the question, it's too early to hire.

Now the numbers. A founding Analytics Engineer in Amsterdam, Stockholm or Berlin costs €640–860/day in 2026 (cross-checked against AddanEx placements, Brainville and Honeypot.io). A founding Senior Data Engineer in the same cities runs €700–900/day. Dublin and London add a band; Helsinki and Brussels sit just below.

Scope the role as what it is: a founding engagement. That means real decision rights, access to the leadership team, and a mandate that goes beyond ticket-work. Series A companies that under-scope by one band lose the contractor inside eight months — every time, in our data.

One counterintuitive lesson: contract length matters more than rate. The strongest founding contractors in our European network want 12-month engagements with genuine extension optionality — not 3-month deals dressed up as "discovery". Below six months, you're competing on price alone, and someone remote from a cheaper market will always undercut you.
