Interim directors aren't a recession trade — they're a permanent shift

It's tempting to read the interim-director boom as a downturn story: budgets tight, headcount frozen, buy the rate. That's not what we're seeing. This is structural — a shift in how Series A–C European companies acquire senior judgement before they can carry the full-time cost of it.

In the last twelve months we've closed eleven interim Head-of-Data and Head-of-Cloud engagements across Europe. The shape is remarkably consistent: three days a week, 6–12 month terms, rolling extensions. Mandates coming out of Amsterdam, Stockholm, Munich, Dublin and Brussels.

The rates land where genuine director-level operators sit: €1,100–1,400/day in Stockholm, Copenhagen and Amsterdam; €1,080–1,460/day in London, Munich and Zurich for a Head of Data or Head of Cloud on a three-day pattern. Below those bands you are not hiring a director — you are hiring a senior individual contributor and hoping.

Extended interim Heads of Data Platform across the same markets sit at €1,000–1,450/day (AddanEx, 2025–26). The premium is judgement density, not arbitrage. Buyers who understand the difference pay it happily.

The pattern that works, every time: a senior operator who has done the full-time role twice before, embedded deeply enough to own outcomes, with a written succession plan baked into the contract from day one.

The pattern that fails: a consultant in a director's clothing, billed by the day, with no operational skin in the game. European buyers spot it inside a month. We've stopped opening those briefs.
