Fully remote didn't die — but hybrid is quietly paying 20% more

The Stack Overflow 2025 Developer Survey put fully-remote work at 42% of professional developers, hybrid at 39%, in-office at 19%. Zoom out to the European contract market and the mix shifts to roughly 30/55/15. Hybrid quietly became the dominant model — and few contractors have priced accordingly.

Fully-remote contracts still exist. But the rate has separated. Our 2026 data shows fully-remote Senior Data Engineer contracts landing €640–800/day across Europe. The same seniority hybrid in Amsterdam, Stockholm or Munich? €740–920/day. Twelve to twenty per cent, for showing up two days a week.

The reason isn't just employer preference. It's competitive pool depth. A fully-remote role gets benchmarked against Warsaw, Lisbon and Bucharest. A hybrid role in Amsterdam does not. The rate is a proxy for the size of the pool you're competing in.

The hybrid contracts that pay best in 2026 have defined outcomes for the office days — architecture review, stakeholder alignment, mentoring. If the on-site day is "come in and code", the premium collapses. Buyers can see what they're getting for the extra 20%, and they price it out fast when they can't.

If you have geographic flexibility, hybrid in a Tier-1 European city typically pays 12–20% more than fully-remote for the same shape. If you have location constraints, target clients whose in-office days align with your travel window — and price the travel in, not out.
