Should you go contract in 2026? The honest maths most articles skip.
A third of the senior engineers we speak to are considering it. Most shouldn't. The ones who should are often running the numbers wrong.
Roughly a third of the senior engineers we speak to across Europe are actively considering a move from permanent to contract. Most shouldn't make it — and the ones who should are often doing the arithmetic wrong.
Start with the financial floor. A €95k Senior Data Engineer permanent salary in Amsterdam is roughly equivalent to a €560/day contract at 220 working days, once you strip out employer social contributions, benefits, holiday and sick pay. Anything below that rate is a pay cut with more risk attached.
Now the ceiling. In 2026 that same Senior Data Engineer is landing €720–900/day on the contract market. That's the arbitrage — but the arbitrage is entirely contingent on utilisation. At 180 billable days (a realistic first-year target), €820/day is €147k gross. At 220 days, it's €180k. At 140 days it's €115k — barely up on permanent, without the safety net.
The non-financial case matters more, and it's the part people romanticise. Contracting rewards depth, delivery discipline and comfort with ambiguity. It punishes anyone who needs long onboarding runways, formal career ladders, or steady stakeholder relationships. If those things energise you, permanent is not a compromise — it's the right answer.
Who shouldn't move in 2026: anyone who joined their last permanent role because of the team; anyone within eighteen months of a major life event that needs cashflow certainty; and anyone whose CV shows less than four years of relevant senior delivery.
Who should: senior operators with 6+ years of shipped delivery, a real network in their discipline, and personal financial runway of at least four months. If that's you, 2026 is the strongest European contract market we've seen in five years — and the window doesn't stay open forever.
