The volume-recruitment model is losing the senior contract market. Here's the data.

CV blasts and pyramid teams still work at the junior end. At the senior end of the European contract market, they cost you time, credibility and the shortlist.

The volume-recruitment model is losing the senior contract market. Here's the data.

APSCo's Q4 2025 contract report showed European contract placement volumes recovering — but average time-to-fill on senior technical roles widening in the same window. Read together, they tell a single story: the top and bottom of the market have separated, and the same playbook no longer works on both.

The volume-recruitment model — pyramid teams, CV blasts, contingent-only engagement — is genuinely efficient for high-volume junior contracting. It falls apart at the senior end, where the pool is small, personal networks decide who picks up your call, and counter-rates from incumbents are aggressive enough to close a deal in an afternoon.

Our own 2026 European data: median 24-day time-to-close on senior contract roles handled director-led. On comparable roles that came to us after a large agency had already been through the market? 41 days. And the second search costs more than time — it costs credibility with a shortlist that has already seen the brief poorly represented.

The buyers switching model in 2026 are almost always Series B+ scale-ups and mid-market enterprises that have run one full cycle with a Tier-1 consultancy or a volume agency, been disappointed, and want an accountable specialist relationship instead. It's rarely their first rodeo. It's usually their last as a repeat customer of the old model.

The trade-off is deliberate. Fewer agencies. Fewer briefs open at once. Higher expectations of whoever you retain. In return: honest scoping, a director on every call, and a shortlist you can actually hire from.
